MUTEC MC3+: Unlocking the Full Potential of CD Playback
The Japanese online magazine Phileweb has taken a close look at the MUTEC MC3+ and impressively demonstrated the untapped sonic potential in traditional CD playback - especially when paired with a high-precision external clock generator like the MC3+.
What is the MUTEC MC3+?
The MUTEC MC3+ combines a word clock generator, reclocker, and digital format converter in a single unit. It enhances digital audio sources through precise reclocking, provides a master clock to other components, and converts between digital formats such as AES/EBU and S/PDIF. Two Ways to Improve Sound Quality
The Phileweb review highlights two scenarios where the MC3+ demonstrates its strengths:
1. Reclocking between CD Transport and DAC
In the test setup, the CD transport (NuPrime CDT-9) is connected via coaxial cable to the S/PDIF input of the MC3+. The reclocked signal is then sent from the MC3+'s coaxial output to the digital input of a D/A converter (Accuphase DC-1000). This reclocking process effectively reduces jitter. The result: noticeably greater precision, structure, and detail.
2. Providing a Word Clock Signal to a CD Player with Clock Input
In the second test scenario, the MC3+ delivers a high-precision word clock signal via BNC cable to the CD player CEC CD3 3.0. The digital audio signal remains untouched and is transmitted directly from the player to the DAC.
Even in this configuration, playback quality improves significantly: resolution, dynamics, and soundstage benefit without altering the player's sonic character.
